Eagles Tie Record, Qualify 11 for Regional
After winning a KVC and Team District title over the past week the Hartland wrestling team remained hot as they qualified 11 wrestlers for next weeks regional at Greenville. The Eagles tied their school record set in 1997 when then also qualified 11 of 14 to the regional. Hartland actually had an opportunity to get 13 through put 13 of 14 in the match to qualify. With all the success Saturday, the Eagles only managed one champion in Drew Hellner at 130. Hellner moved up from his usual 125 after struggling to make weight for the past month. Hellner post a 4-0 record topping Jesse Reader of Lapeer West 12-4 in the finals to win his first District Championship and qualify for the regional for the second straight year. Hartland’s other finalists were Gabe Chevrier 103, Steve Johnson 112, and Marc Nelson 145 who are all first time qualifiers.
The Eagles put seven wrestlers into the third place match with three wrestlers coming away with third place medals. Shawn Petitpren qualified for his third regional tournament by knocking of a Mt. Morris opponent for third. Steve Steckroth 152 and Jim Bunn 275 each qualified for their second regional by dominating their third place matches with a major decision and fall respectively. Derek Nuhn 130, Joe Tulip 171, Shane Begoske 215, all pinned their opponents to reach the consolation finals before taking fourth place. Bill Pare’ took a hard earned fourth place while wrestling in the District’s toughest weight class 140. Pare’, a State Qualifier in 2000, lost to Jon Freeze of Swartz Creek (4th in State 2000) in the third place match, while Charlie Myer of Oxford (6th 1998 & 5th 2000) fell to Jesse Grenillo of Holly the Oakland County Champion in the championship match.
Tom Ventura at 160, and Brett McManaman 135 both just missed placing winning two matches each before falling in the match to qualify for the regional.
