Eagles Qualify Five for State Championships
The Hartland wrestling team had a just miss week. After falling to Oxford in a heartbreaking Team Regional semi-final match 31-30, the Eagles had five wrestlers lose in their match to qualify for the State Championships. Five Hartland wrestlers will continue on and try to reach their ultimate goal of a State Championship in two weeks at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
Two Hartland wrestlers claimed individual titles. Jim Bunn 275 and Gabe Chevrier 103 each recorded falls in the finals to be crowned Regional Champions. Jim Bunnís run to a championship was probably the most impressive as he upset Jon Herstein of Fenton (3rd in State 2000) in the semi-finals 5-2. In the finals Bunn was leading by 15 points when he pinned Josh Johnson of Lapeer West. This will be Bunnís second trip to the State Finals. Gabe Chevrier was almost as impressive while racking up a major decision in the opening round, a decision in the semi-finals and pinning Steve Lampar of Lapeer West in a crushing headlock in the first period in the finals. Hartland had three other wrestlers qualify for the State Meet to take their total to five. Shawn Petitpren 119 knock off a Ludington opponent with a 42-3 record in his match to qualify, and then pinned his Fremont opponent to capture third place and qualify for the State Championships for the first time. Steve Steckroth 152 also placed third. Steckroth topped a Sparta opponent for third qualifying him for the State Tournament for second straight year.
